This 3 Session/12hour Workshop at KSL Studio provides an in-depth study of the ancient medium of heated pigmented beeswax and is designed for artists that want to incorporate encaustic technique into their own art making practice. Learn the fundamental safety issues, unique tools, and necessary equipment for studio set up, as well as various materials, supports, grounds, encaustic resources and beginning guidelines for painting with a molten medium. Discover alternative ways to draw, paint and add dimension to your work using solvent-free techniques that include brushing, layering, fusing, inlay, incising, collage, and image/drawing transfers. Kristin Swenson-Lintault is a multimedia artist and instructor. She earned her MFA in Fibers/Textiles and her BA in Fine Art/Drawing.She studied painting in Scotland, and traditional natural dye and indigo textile dyeing, washi hand papermaking and wood-fired ceramics in Japan and South Korea. In 2001 she began using encaustic as a way to combine techniques and has exhibited her work locally, nationally and in Nakajo, Japan. She currently teaches workshops, and classes at her studio in Seattle and encaustic demos for R&F Handmade Paints, Inc.

Kristin's work will be shown at A&C beginning Friday June 18th at the U-District Art Walk. Opening Reception from 5-7pm.

The work of Jasper Johns has greatly influenced my personal love of encaustic and I love any chance I get to see his work in person (this link is a piece I traveled very far to see..) The show Target Practice at the Seattle Art Museum this summer had many wonderful examples of his ability to consistently master the application and layering of encaustic wax. Don't miss this additional local show of sculpture and prints titled Jasper Johns: Light Bulb at The Henry Art Gallery thru Oct. 25, 2009.

Encaustic Wax, An Ancient Medium Rediscovered is on view in the upper gallery at the Watchung Arts Center in Somerset County, NJ on Wednesday September 9th thru Sept. 29, 2009. The show features 18 artists and is curated by Francesca Azarra.

2009 Encaustic Conference Exhibition "Beauty and Its Opposites"

I have returned to Seattle from the 2009 International Encaustic Conference and I wish I could have stayed longer! What a great time we all had. The conference show "Beauty and Its Opposites" was beautifully put together and I was happy to exhibit
my work this year with so many talented artists.

This juried group exhibition features 20 artists from across the US, selected by Nick Capasso, Senior Curator at the DeCordova Museum. Capasso selected the theme Beauty and Its Opposites to challenge participants to go beyond the beauty of the wax. He notes that “Beauty is once again a relevant issue in contemporary art, and it is particularly relevant to encaustic where there is an expectation of beauty,” says Capasso, noting the lush surface and translucence of the medium. “I am personally interested to see how much one might intentionally subvert beauty. Today The Heated Palette is officially online. Thank you for visiting!

I am about to fly out to Boston tonight to attend the Annual Encaustic Painting Conference at the Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, Massachusetts. So many artists have been anxiously waiting for this weekend to arrive. I will be attending the opening of "Beauty and Its Opposites" the juried conference show on Saturday. I have three paintings on exhibit and I am excited to see the many additional encaustic shows this year as well. I will be blogging about the demos, lectures, exhibitions and hope to share plenty of info and photos here when I return. Please feel free to contact me to share information or to ask any questions. The Heated Palette: Introduction to Encaustic Painting

This four session class provides an in-depth study of the ancient medium of heated pigmented beeswax and is designed for artists that want to incorporate encaustic technique into their own art making practice. Learn the fundamental safety issues, unique tools, and necessary equipment for studio set up, as well as various materials, supports, grounds, and beginning guidelines for painting with a molten medium. Discover alternative ways to draw and paint and add dimension to your work using solvent-free techniques that include brushing, layering, fusing, inlay, incising, collage, and image/drawing transfers. This introductory class will examine essential historical examples as well as contemporary work being exhibited today. Above all, have fun in this highly creative and experimental environment. No prior experience in encaustic is necessary.

Surface and Dimension: Mixed Media Methods

Mixing media is an exciting way to revitalize various familiar mediums and establish imaginative and experimental outcomes. This four session class provides an in-depth study of the ancient medium of heated pigmented beeswax and is designed for artists that have some previous encaustic painting experience and want to develop new methods to express depth and versatility in their work. Learn more about how this dynamic luminescent medium can amplify your work by exploring a range of techniques that include layering, dipping, collage, embossing, carving, resist, image transfers and building textured vs. ultra smooth surfaces. Be inspired in this hands-on creative environment and play with printed paper, handmade paper, various types of fabric, natural fibers, charcoal, ink, graphite, and pigment sticks. This intermediate level class will examine essential historical examples as well as contemporary work being exhibited today.

KSL Studio History

My art studio was once an unfinished run down old building with a loft and not a whole lot going for it........The process of re-modeling has been long but with the help of many (they know who they are!) this studio has a real future for me as a working artist and now as a classroom for other artists interested in encaustic painting and other mixed media with a fiber/textile emphasis. I have had some of the most talented artists as intructors, professors, mentors, colleagues and friends over the years and I truly owe them a debt of gratitude for the wealth of knowledge they shared with me. I am so grateful and excited to be able to offer classes this summer and share some of my knowledge with you. Welcome to KSL Studio!
